Nous aurone le plaisir d'écouter : Guido Caniglia & Ely/iott Mermans (University of Helsinki)

Titre : Overcoming dogmas in philosophy of science. Learning from trans-queer and disability studies
Résumé :
Philosophy of science has traditionally been shaped by assumptions concerning neutrality, universality, and the separation of epistemic from ethical and political concerns. Over the past decades, these assumptions have been critically and productively reworked by feminist, Black, Indigenous, and social epistemologies, alongside more recent efforts within the field to challenge them both in theory and in practice, such as through new methodological approaches.

This talk builds on and contributes to these ongoing debates by drawing on crip, queer and trans studies, and on the WEIRD project: “Whose Sustainability? Disability and Queer Perspectives for Just Sustainability Transformations”. The project is situated at the intersection of sustainability science, environmental humanities, and social–ecological systems research, while explicitly engaging with disability and trans–queer studies.

Relying on key lines of research within WEIRD, the talk develops two main contributions. First, it explores the ethical–methodological implications of learning from disability, trans and queer studies for philosophy of science, suggesting that these perspectives extend existing approaches by foregrounding accountability, embodiment, and the relational conditions under which knowledge is produced. Second, it provides concrete examples from queer and trans ecology and from disability-informed sustainability research, showing how established concepts such as nature, agency, and participation can be reconsidered in more inclusive and reflexive ways.

The talk proposes a constructive reorientation of philosophy of science toward more situated, plural, and people/diversity-sensitive methodologies suited to contemporary social–ecological challenges.
