« Three Roads from Quantum Analogy »
In this talk I will discuss the philosophical and methodological implications of three analogies found in the context of quantum theory: firstly, the analogy between quantum chemistry and quantum gravity via the application of the Born-Oppenheimer approximation; secondly, the analogy between bouncing oil-droplets and a certain approach to pilot-wave understandings of quantum theory; thirdly, a potential analogy between quantum cosmology and the Caldeira-Leggett open quantum systems model. In each case I will consider the insights, dangers and potential heuristics of the analogies. I will then seek to draw some general conclusions.
